Fog Harvester?

April 11th, 2012

You have been amazing, wonderfully generous!

Thank you for helping us sort out our fog harvester, which had fallen on hard times. The new one is working like a bomb! The water is pouring off it and being captured in our 10,000 litre tanks. It really is a wonderful extraordinarily different way of capturing such an scarce and precious resource like water.

I’m hoping to get a picture of the fog harvester when we have our next rainy and misty day. That only happens when the wonderful North-Westerlys blow in from the South Atlantic. I will rush up the mountain and take a photo so that you can see how well it works… watch this space…

Food Vouchers

February 29th, 2012

It works! The food voucher idea has made life very much easier for all of us at the POP Centre kitchens.

Lots of questions around whose name is on their voucher card, and I had great pleasure in telling them all about you and your generosity to them.

Its really a great idea, and makes for a very orderly system of feeding hundreds of hungry children every day.

The Winter months have already started, and work is scarce. The next 90 days are the crucial ones in terms of income in the families of these seasonal farm workers. And these food vouchers will be making all the difference between a well nourished Winter, or hungry tummys every morning.

Thank you SO much, these children will never know how lucky they are to have friends like you.

Boxes of Blessings

December 20th, 2011

Wow, your response was wonderful. The families that got these magnificent “food parcels” were thrilled and delighted. And, as usual, a little confused as to where this generous windfall had come from. I explained to them that there are people overseas who are concerned about them and worried that they would not have sufficient food over the Christmas period and wanted to be remembered for their kindness to those less fortunate than themselves.

As you can imagine there were many questions that all began with… “Yes, but… “. I did my best to answer them, but for many of them it is still very mysterious as to why people far away would want to help them.

On behalf of all these struggling farm workers, a great big THANK YOU, and the wish that you have a happy and pleasant Christmas.

600 Plots and Growing!

August 3rd, 2011

Wow, Simone, our organic gardener is ecstatic with the response that we have had to our Rent ‘A Plot in Africa’ appeal! You have been wonderfully generous and our vegetable garden is already thriving.

Isn’t it wonderful to rent a plot of fertile vegetable producing land in Africa and know that this little plot feeds children every day all year.

Go and have a look – see if you can find your plot on our Organic Garden page.

Remember, if you are not yet a plot renter, then please join today. All you need do is contact us.

e-Pap Feeding African Children this Winter

May 25th, 2011

The word ‘e-Pap’ sounds so strange to someone who has never heard it before. The word Pap in Africa is used widely to mean ‘porridge’ and the ‘e’ is used as shorthand for ‘energy’. So put the ‘e’ and the ‘Pap’ together and you get ‘Energy Porridge’, but that is too long so it is known as ‘e-Pap’ and everyone in this part of Africa will know what you are talking about. It really is a great ‘energy booster’ and much loved by the children. Thank you for helping us get the ‘e-Pap’ moving to those who desperately need it. The appeal has been a big success and many children will be getting at least one meal a day this Winter.

Teach a Child to Bake Bread

April 26th, 2011

So this was our plan. We got all the young leaders in from a wide variety of rural communities (there must have been about 80 of them), we gave each one of them a baking tin and the ingredients. They weren’t allowed to leave until they had baked a loaf of bread. What excitement! There was flour and water and all the other ingredients all over the place and all over them!! It was a wonderful experience, and everybody enjoyed themselves and learnt a lot!

Baking bread just goes to show how different everyone is. Some youngsters produced the most beautiful bread imaginable and others (not very many) baked bread that just completely flopped – it never rose an inch. After they had all learnt the basics, they went back to their communities loaded down with ingredients and equipment to show the other children how its done. It was significant occasion, and the confidence that these children gained by baking bread…

See the Bake Bread Photo Gallery

Thank you for making this such a wonderful, practical skill that they all now have to feed themselves, and their families. It was only possible because of your generous and kind support.

Back To School 2011

February 28th, 2011

I have photographs of our POP children going off to school for the very first time.
The look of anxiety/happiness and fearfulness brought tears to my eyes.
What a big moment in their lives and how important to look as smart as you possibly can. You so badly want to fit in with all the other children and make new friends quickly. Looking good is sooo important. And they do look good and this is due to your kindness and generosity in providing them with beautiful new school outfits to wear. On their behalf a big THANK YOU.

Boxes of Blessings

January 26th, 2011

It feels as if the countryside around us is covered in Boxes of Blessings!

I wish you could have seen the astonished looks of the faces of all those families who were lucky enough to get a Box this year. The fun, the laughter, the sheer happiness was wonderful. I watched the food being packed out onto the kitchen tables and the children excitedly climbing into the Boxes. We got the young people who painted the Boxes to hand them over to the receiving families. They also found that very moving. See the image gallery. Thank you all so much for these generous gifts.”

Old Age Home Appeal

January 12th, 2011

You are amazing! This appeal has really struck a cord in all of you. The response has been so good that in a very short space of time we will have sufficient funds to equip our old age home in the valley with furniture and essential household goods.

We already have a queue of people waiting to go into this old age home. In fact, we have 2 couples currently living in an old shipping container. This is terrible! These shipping containers are made of steel and the tempreture last week for 4 days was over 40 degree C! Boiling hot!

The situation is critical, but thanks to you, we have a plan and i’m going to put my very best time and energy into getting this old age home built ASAP.

Thank you, i’m greatly encouraged by your generosity and will work tirelessly to see this old age home a reality in the very near future.

Bless You ALL

Ingrid

The Incredible Potato Run

December 11th, 2010

I think we have started a movement. This appeal for help has not gone unnoticed. We are getting enquiries on how this project can be repeated in other communities. We have even turned it into a picture comic book that will be sent out to 20 000 farm workers to encourage them to talk to their employers and see if they can’t do something similar in their area.

So ‘thank you’ for your support. It has been a great boost to other rural communities to get out there a try and solve their own problem of lack of food through innovative ideas.

Ingrid.

The Incredible Potato Run

September 29th, 2010

Dear Friends, South African farmers get a very bad press. There always seems to be some story about them mistreating their workers or behaving in some objectionable way. It seems very difficult to reverse this trend, but I have to say that The Incredible Potato Run seems to be doing just that. Mr BP van der Merwe, who is a kind farmer who has made his surplus potatoes available to us, is not a rarity. Surprising as it might be, there are many farmers like Mr van der Merwe who, where possible, extend the hand of friendship and generosity to those less well off than themselves.

Thank you for your support. We are going regularly for the potatoes and whatever other vegetables are available to us from Mr van der Merwe’s farm. This project is making a difference and we just want you to know how grateful we are to you for giving us your wholehearted support.

Thank you and bless you

Ingrid

Winter Woolies Report Back

September 1st, 2010

It is freezing! Whoever thought that there would be snow on the mountains around Cape Town. It seems to happen more often than we expect. And yet there it is, on the mountains, like icing sugar on a cake. If you only had a T-shirt and a pair of short pants, and only one pair of good shoes that you don’t wear all the time, then Winters in this part of Africa are tough. You can imagine who thrilled many of our children were when they heard that we were going to kit them out to handle the harsh winter months. Thank you so much for your response to our generous appeal! Our children want to join me in thanking you for looking after them so well and so generously.

Kind regards
Ingrid Lestrade

Food Voucher Appeal

July 21st, 2010

We don’t deserve you, your generosity for the food voucher appeal has been awesome! The food voucher cards are winging their way to us from the Grow Peace office in Ipswich. This is the perfect moment to be handing out these food vouchers because many of the families that will be benefiting from this are not working at the moment, the harvests are over, and the pruning has been completed. We are thrilled and delighted with your support. So a BIG thank you from the POP team.

Hint: come back soon to hear how you can join our Potato Truck team. I know this is a very strange use of words, I am bursting to tell you more, but you’ll just have to wait until all our plans are finally in place.

Food Parcel Appeal

May 12th, 2010

We don’t like food parcel appeals. We think they are short term and if not done very sensitively, create dependencies which are not helpful in the long run. Having said that, the poverty we see around us is sometimes so horrifying and disturbing that we have no option but to support families who are living on the very margins of society. Food parcels bring immediate relief to hundreds of children and many rural families in the region.

At present, because of your generous support, we are able to feed over 900 hungry children, and the numbers are growing daily, thanks to you. We are deeply grateful to you, and want to say that without your ongoing help we would be unable to reach these children as successfully as we have been able to do.

Baby Gift Packs

May 12th, 2010

What a relief to have in stock baby gift packs which you so generously donated in April 2010! Thank you! You are a wonderful kind group of friends, and I don’t know what we would do without you. The children on the farms and in the poor communities around the villages in the Western Cape have been greatly blessed to have you as their big-hearted supporters.

Marieta, our nurse, has been out and about preparing the children for the winter months, and making sure that the babies were well stocked up for the seasonal north-westerly gales which blow in from from the south Atlantic at this time of year in South Africa, causing havoc and miserable conditions for poor rural people living in shacks made of tin, plastic, and cardboard.

Thank you.

Sandwiches for Hungry Children

February 20th, 2010

A big THANK YOU for supporting our sandwich makers.

The Valley Deli is a very special project because you are in fact saying to a group of teenagers who get up at 5 every morning and make sandwiches for over 95 small children who would otherwise face hunger at school ”Well done, I congratulate you and support your efforts to help the other children”!

Sometimes they bake their own bread when the money to buy bread runs out. Sometimes there is very little to put on the sandwiches BUT they have never missed a school day in FOUR YEARS!!! Amazing isn’t it?

Do you know of any other group of teenagers who would get up every morning at 5 o’clock and make sandwiches for their younger brothers and sisters? Frankly I don’t.

When I told the three teams of sandwich makers that the project would go on thanks to the generosity of friends in South Africa and overseas they were themselves amazed that anyone from ‘outside’ would want to help them. I explained that there were many people in the world who worried about starving children and would go to great lengths to help. They asked me to say “Thank You” to you on their behalf, which I said I would do with pleasure.

Ingrid Lestrade

PS. The Valley Deli have posted their Bread and Buns Recipes on our website for you to enjoy and share in their food circle. We would love to hear from anyone who tries these recipes out. Send us your Bread and Buns recipe feedback. We also invite you to share your own favourite ‘Bread and Bun’ recipes too, and we promise to get our young woman to try them out.

Boxes of Blessings

February 2nd, 2010

Thank you for supporting our Boxes of Blessings appeal. The gift of food is always welcome in a poor house but these boxes are especially appreciated as they can be used for storing precious documents and food safe from insects, flood or fire.

The appeal was tremendously successful so much so that I will be able to hand out these boxes to poor families during the month of January as well. The levels of poverty in these farming communities is heartbreaking and the tears of gratitude made for some very emotional moments.

Food for the hungry and poor

Thank you for coming to the rescue. Work should be available once the grape harvest starts.

We’ve done it!

November 27th, 2009
POP Children's Fund

Or more accurately YOU have done it. Your generosity has made it possible for us to build our 3rd POP youth centre. We can now go to the owners of the land designated for the POP centre, and tell them that we have the money and are ready to purchase the plot! The designs for the centre are already on the drawing board! This is a big moment for us and we are over the moon! You really rose to the occasion, dug deeply into your pockets, and came up with the money to buy the land. A heartfelt THANK YOU to you all.

But the good news does not end there. We have found a funder who is prepared to build the centre for us. Can you believe that? Isn’t that tremendous? More about this funder later, but it is a great indicator of the high esteem our POP youth model is held in, and how everyone is confident that we can help another 1000 rural children out of poverty over the next ten years from this centre.

We will keep you informed, step by step, on the progress we make. The funders are anxious that the centre is up and running by September of 2010. So we are pulling out all the stops and hoping that nothing gets in our way.

Building our dream

November 2nd, 2009
sustainable-agriculture-project

Our dream in January 2008  was to plant 10 000 Olive trees at our first POP youth centre near Cape Town. We have been hard at work and as usual our generous friends heard our call for support and have so far responded magnificently. Of the 10 000 trees needed we have planted 1270 trees so far. Another 8730 trees to go! The fruit from these olive trees will be sold as olive oil  and the income from the oil  will support the rural children who are on the ‘path out of poverty. ’We would love to put your name on an olive tree in Africa.
